PJ – Jota Quest

PJ (Paulo Roberto Diniz Jr.) is the bassist and co-founder of the multi-platinum Brazilian band Jota Quest, one of Latin America’s most successful pop-rock acts. Since forming the band in 1993, he has recorded numerous chart-topping albums, earned multiple Latin Grammy Awards, and performed countless shows throughout Brazil, Latin America, Europe, and the United States.

Known for his groove-driven playing, PJ combines the rhythmic sensibilities of funk and soul with the energy and directness of rock. His bass lines are often melodic and highly syncopated, serving as a defining element of Jota Quest’s sound. He began playing bass as a teenager in Brasília, first performing in punk bands before developing a broader musical vocabulary influenced by artists spanning rock, funk, jazz, and black music.

PJ has cited a remarkably diverse range of influences, including Mark King, Flea, Jaco Pastorius, Larry Graham, Stanley Clarke, Stuart Zender, Geddy Lee, John Paul Jones, Chic, Jamiroquai, The Police, Weather Report, and Return to Forever.

Throughout the band’s history and live shows, PJ has relied on a refined collection of premium, custom, and multi-scale electric basses and is often associated with Fender, Carl Thompson, and Spector instruments.

Widely regarded as one of Brazil’s premier bassists, PJ’s musicianship reflects a unique blend of groove, melody, and versatility that has made him a respected figure among bass players worldwide.
